The only significant change I could recommend to the AI is that it should emulate a human player's bloodlust when an enemy hero is vulnerable. I particularly like the AI's habit of forming up decent sized combined groups instead of sending units piecemeal. It will attack constantly along multiple axes probing for weaknesses. The strategic AI is quite challenging in either the campaign or skirmish missions. I've been waiting since Herzog Zwei for this to be a common feature in RTS'. Units may have their orders set by their producing building so that you can set continous production, target a location, set an order, and have a supply of troops without any micromanagement.

This system is scriptable but AFAIK undocumented. Units on "Aggressive" will seek and destroy without any problems but often you would prefer to keep them at a specific location. Units need to be a bit more aggressive defending themselves on "Guard" orders. Worse, a mage with melee units may end up engaging the enemy alone as the melee units stand still. For example if an enemy is using a ranged attack on them and they cannot attack back, they should either charge or retreat, but may stand still or walk back and forth. The only problem I've ever seen with the AI is guarding units can get confused about their various attack radii.

Heroes benefit from this as well- a spellcasting hero need not be monitored constantly, just set him to "Magic Attacker" (for example) and he'll rain fire upon his enemies. Your can take orders such as "Magic Guardian" that allow them to use their innate magical abilities in a defined role. When you are familiar with the races and different abilities take a look at how the troop bonuses fit with your play style.

My current human Archmage has great spellcasting for combat or summoning, can summon stationary "guardian" defensive units, and gets upgrade cost benefits as well. Or there are infinite variations on splitting your hero's skills between toe-to-toe fighting and spellcasting in support of your units. If you want to have an alchemist/merchant hero that does nothing but sit in his base, summon golems, and make unit purchases/upgrades cheaper, no problem. I love to see enemy units flee as the 20 foot tall monstrosity impales their brethren on his flaming trident and shouts "Bow to me or die!" Determining the optimal use of your ability points granted by levels is a science in itself. For sheer ass kicking try a Daemon Deathknight at least once.

How many races and classes does a typical PC role-playing game have these days? Pool of Radiance II anyone? Warlords Battlecry II has 75+ combinations. Hero races, classes, stats, abilities, and spells are extraordinarily diverse. Classic mob-rush RTS masters should try Barbarians and Orcs but your rushers will need combined arms to get past decent defenses. Slow ponderous engines of mechanized death? Dwarves and Dark Dwarves. Do you favor high-speed airborne troops with magical abilities? Try Daemons and Fey. I suggest playing several games as a random race to gain basic familiarity with most of them. SSG has pulled off an amazing balance of the races- they all have different units and some have totally opposed play styles, but there are no easy wins against competent opponents. There are several basic groups like Elves which have distinct High Elf, Wood Elf, and Dark Elf armies, as well as unique races like Daemons and Fey (Fairy-type race). The armies are along classic fantasy lines with some differences from the original Warlords races.

Each side has some shared and some unique units, plus common stuctures and production/upgrade buildings. Apart from the hero you have about a dozen different armies to play. Your hero is a major asset and will frequently be the focus of your tactics. Your army is led by a hero who has 75+ possible choices of race/class combination. Warlords Battlecry II is a truly unique and outstanding RTS with significant role-playing elements. Warlords Battlecry I really didn't bring enough to the table to surpass its contemporaries IMO. The original Warlords, however, is one of my favorite games of all time. I'm not a big RTS gamer at all and my experience is limited to Warcraft, Starcraft, plus Westwood games mostly.
